Week of 12/13/2010

12/16/10
3 miles in 28:40/Split 9:33
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). Took it easy since I'm on a roll with four weeks, in a row, with only one run. Don't know what's up but something is lacking in my Dedication, Commitment or Desire. I need to get off my A$$ and start running THREE TIMES A WEEK again!

Week of 12/6/2010

12/9/10
3 miles in 27:44/Split 9:14
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). Pushed it again at the end. Without my GPS watch, I only have three measured 3 mile routes and all of them are on the Pearl City Bike Path. The scenery is getting mighty boring!

Week of 11/29/2010

12/2/10
3 miles in 27:40/Split 9:13
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipio Point Access Rd). Fast run despite the fact that I cannot monitor my pace. I pushed hard the last 4 min.

Week of 11/22/2010

11/28/10
3 miles in 29:40/Split 9:53
Pearl City Bike Path (Neal Blaisdell Park). Noticed another runner as I turned around & picked it up (1 1/2 mile point). Couldn't maintain the pace and had to walk, for a minute, during the 3rd mile.

Mom is visiting for Thanksgiving (13 days in all) and I'm not finding much time to run.

Week of 11/15/2010

11/16/10
3 miles in 29:29/Split 9:49
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). My GPS watch wouldn't even turn on...dead! I ran an easy 3 miles and kept track of my time via iPod ;-)

11/18/10
3 miles in 29:17/Split 9:45
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). My GPS watch won't charge & my iPod won't hold a charge...damn! Oh yeah, I ran also :-|

Week of 11/8/2010

11/9/10
3.5 miles in 33:39/Split 9:37
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). Well, I planned on going 4 miles but...I was passed during the 2nd mile by a runner wearing a "marathon readiness" t-shirt. Now, I let him go but for some reason increased my pace though I had no chance of catching da other buggah. I'm lucky I ran as far as I did (could have died after 2 miles).

11/12/10
3.5 miles in 35:05/Split 10:01
Kalihi Street Loop. I struggled and needed a short walk break during the 1st mile (I don't like running uphill!). Ran better afterwards and even added an extra half-mile (most of it uphill).

11/14/10
3 miles in 29:33/Split 9:51
Pearl City Bike Path (Neal Blaisdell Park). Felt bloated during the UP (should not have ate that Panda Bowl). Felt like throwing up a couple of times on the BACK.

Week of 11/1/2010

11/2/10
3 miles in 29:56/Split 9:58
Kalihi Street Loop. I'm not conditioned to run this course anymore. Had to walk & rest during the 1st 2 miles. I like da flat courses ;-)

11/5/10
4 miles in 39:20/Split 9:50
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). Felt good & by the 2nd mile, I decided to go 4 milles (ouais!).

Note:
My throat felt a little sore so I skipped my usual Sunday run.

Week of 10/25/2010

10/12/10
3 miles in 29:08/Split 9:43
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). Had that out-of-shape feeling again (because of only 2 runs last week?).

10/12/10
3 miles in 28:52/Split 9:32
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipio Point Access Rd). Felt better and even picked it up a bit on the last mile ;-)

10/24/10
3 miles in 30:18/Split 10:06
Pearl City Bike Path (Neal Blaisdell Park). Ran towards Pearl Harbor & the beginning of the path (3.5 mile up-and-back). Tired during the last mile (3 short walks to rest).

Week of 10/18/2010

10/19/10
2.5 miles in 24:18/Split 9:43
West Loch Shoreline Park. Morning run but it was still hot. Wanted to run 3 miles but I died at 2-and-a-half.

10/24/10
2.5 miles in 24:38/Split 9:51
Pearl City Bike Path (Neal Blaisdell Park). Planned on 3 miles, tired at the 2 mile point & died a half-mile later. The temp was only in the mid 80's but the tropical sun was so intense (running during peak sun times doesn't help either).

Week of 10/11/2010

10/12/10
3 miles in 29:03/Split 9:41
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipahu Depot Rd). Started out slow for the first half...felt fat! Picked it up for the last mile-and-a-half.

10/12/10
3 miles in 28:24/Split 9:28
Pearl City Bike Path (Waipio Point Access Rd). Forgot my GPS watch & my iPod died near the end of my run so the distance & time are just estimates. My iPod battery is just about dead so I might be musicless very soon :(

Week of 10/4/2010

Note:
Nada workouts :(

Week of 9/27/2010

Note:
I'm having a hard time starting my runs earlier in the week. I can't run 3 times a week if my 1st run is on Friday!

10/1/10
3 miles in 29:36/Split 9:52
Pearl City Bike Path. Started at the end of the path on Waipahu Depot Rd. It rained and I got soaked! Had to hop over puddles but I was still able to keep a normal pace.

10/3/10
3 miles in 29:37/Split 9:52
Pearl City Bike Path. The usual Sunday run at usual place. Felt tired after 2nd mile and held on to finish the 3rd (it was somehow my fasted mile).

Week of 9/20/2010

9/21/10
3 miles in 30:19/Split 10:06
West Loch Shoreline Park. My GPS died so I ran the 1.5 mile loop twice. There is a steep hill connecting the park to the surface streets (had to climb twice). My calf was still sore, afterwards, but not as bad (iced it at home).

9/23/10
3 miles in 29:33/Split 9:51
Pearl City Bike Path. Ran an up-and-back from Waipio Point Access Road to Lehua Ave. Nice and shady on the UP but the sun was in my eyes coming BACK. The starting point is just down the road from my Thursday worksite :)

9/26/10
2 miles in 28:52/Split 14:26
Manana Trail (see pic below). Boy this was a mistake! I did more hiking than running. Up & down terrain, along with lots of exposed roots, made running difficult. I died on the first hill!

Week of 9/13/2010

9/16/10
3.5 miles in 33:57/Split 9:42
Pearl City Bike Path. Followed another runner before turning around at the 2 mile point. I died at 3 miles but suffered for another half-mile.

9/19/10
3 miles in 30:47/Split 9:54
Pearl City Bike Path. My left calf was still sore so I didn't wear my knee strap. I tried to run an easy 4 miles but gave up after 3 miles. I wasn't tired, cardio-wise, but my energy level was E=0! Hmm...maybe energy drinks and NO water is a bad combo. Also, with only 2 runs a week, for the last month, I shouldn't be increasing the length of my workouts.

Week of 9/6/2010

Okay, this was whimp out week! First, I didn't want to run until I was completely over my cold (though I've run sick before). With both of my runs, I quit earlier than intended.

9/9/10
2.5 miles in 25:04/Split 10:02
Pearl City Bike Path. Started out of too fast (passed a slower runner and kept on at too fast of a pace) & died at 1.5 miles. Needed 3 walk breaks (not included in the time :-) to finish 2 miles.

9/12/10
2.5 miles in 24:43/Split 9:54
Ewa Beach near the former Barber Point Naval Air Station. I didn't care for this route at all. It was hot, dry and consisted of dirt, rocks, coral along the side of Geiger Rd/Roosevelt Ave. I don't know if it was the coral but my feet were killing me by the end of the run.

Week of 8/30/2010

8/31/10
2.5 miles in 25:04/Split 10:02
West Loch Shoreline Park. This is the third time I've run this course and I still got lost! I think my midfoot strike & shin wrap are not compatible. The midfoot strike puts stress on my calves. The shin wrap is covering part of my left calf. The result is a sore calf. Next run I will tape up my lower leg but keep it below my calf.

9/2/10
3 miles in 30:35/Split 10:12
West Loch Shoreline Park. I finally ran the course correctly (found the access road I missed on the 1st try). Turn left for a 1.5 mile loop...then go right for a 1.25 mile up-and-back). My calf is still a little sore so...no tape for the next run!

Note:
Started getting a sore throat on Saturday so I skipped my weekend run.

Week of 8/23/2010

8/25/10
2 miles in 19:19/Split 9:38
Ala Moana Beach Park. I forgot my dang socks but that wasn't going to stop me! It actually felt good running sockless but then I felt a small pebble underneath my foot. I wanted to go 3 miles but by 2 miles and 2800 steps, my left foot was killing me. At 2am, I woke up and thought, "Why didn't I just stop and take the damn pebble out?!?! Duh!!!

8/29/10
3 miles in 31:10/Split 10:23
Pear City Bike Path. Wore socks this time :-| Ran slow but really concentrated on my foot strike (mid-foot). When I tire or lose focus, I tend to land more flat footed and my foot strike becomes more of a FOOT STOMP!

Week of 8/16/2010

8/18/10
3 miles in 30:45/Split 10:13
Pearl City Bike Path. Ran 3 miles at a slow pace. There was a runner in front of me but I didn't speed up (like usual...just stayed behind). I was gasping during the end of mile 3 (failed the talk test!).

Note:
During my last two runs, I've noticed a dull pain just above my left knee cap. Could this be related to wrapping my shin?

8/20/10
2 miles in 19:20/Split 9:41
Kalihi St Loop. Ran a little faster, than intended, but the pace felt comfortable. I tried out new inserts in my shoes (memory foam) and a knee strap (to relieve the knee pain). Everything went well though my left calf was sore for some reason.

8/22/10
2 miles in 20:09/Split 10:05
Pearl City Bike Path. I work only 3 hours on Sundays so a run is a perfect activity for afterwards (and the bike path is nearby). Easy pain-free run :)

Week of 8/9/2010

8/9/10
2 miles in 19:33/Split 9:48
Pearl City Bike Path. Ran an easy 2 miles concentrating on my foot strike. Felt no pain in my lower left leg. I need to stretch plenty before running and ice down my leg afterwards. I think I will buy an Ace bandage to wrap around my shin during my runs.

8/11/10
2 miles in 20:18/Split 10:10
Pearl City Bike Path. Ran on egg shells without a care about time. Used self-grip athletic tape on my lower left leg. Iced down my leg...but not until 6 hours later. Bottom line: no pain!

8/15/10
3 miles in 31:30/Split 10:30
Pearl City Bike Path. Slow, easy 3 mile run. My GPS watch died so time and distance are only an estimate (used music on iPod for time). After the fact, I checked my route on Gmaps & it measured out to 3.0155 miles! The route: Start at Neal Blaisdell Park near the play structure (going west), continue past Lehua Ave, turn around at the bridge over the stream & go back to the park.

Week of 8/2/2010

8/2/10
4 miles in 42:40/Split 10:40
West Loch Shoreline Park. Ran a slower pace trying to concentrate on a soft foot strike. I got totally lost and had to run an extra 2 miles to get back near the start point. This course has confused me for a 2nd time!

8/4/10
Pearl City Bike Path. Barely ran a 1/4 mile when I felt pain in my lower left leg (uh oh!). I immediately stopped, turned around and walked back to my car. No more running for the rest of the week (wah wah!).

Week of 7/26/2010

Well, this is week 2 of my self imposed layoff. I'm paranoid that 2008 will come back and haunt me (Medial & Anterior shin splints sidelined me for 6 months!). I got to wondering if I'm wearing the correct running shoe. A simple wet test (see image below) confirmed that I have normal arches and a neutral foot alignment (need a stability shoe). My New Balance 1224's are supposed to be for stability but are in fact for motion control (overpronation). Also the stiff midsole is not conducive to my mid-foot strike. Sigh...they'll have to do for now.

Week of 7/19/2010

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
It seems that I have medial shin splints or more correctly:
medial tibial stress syndrome.
I felt pain, though slight, last weekend and throughout this week when walking. The pain is in a familiar area...inside of my lower left leg (a few inches above my ankle). I have a history of shin splints and want to take no chances. This means time off from running (2 weeks?).
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Do I have a pronation problem? Don't know. I think only a gait analysis will give me a definitive answer. The image below illustrates the location of my injury (I've also suffered from anterior compartment syndrome but let's not even go there!).

Week of 7/12/2010

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

7/12/10
3 miles in 29:33/Split 9:48
Sand Island Beach Park (see above photo). Hot, hot day. The paved path is too windy (I like loops). After a mile, I ended up on Sand Island Access Road. The road is wide, with bike lanes, but this is an industrial area (diesel fumes, the smell of hot glue and other toxic odors).

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

7/15/10
2 miles in 20:06/Split 10:03
West Loch Shoreline Park (above image). There is a 1.5 mile loop that I had planned on circling twice. Well, after a mile the paved path ended (wrong turn?). I then found myself running on a garbage-strewn dirt road behind industrial buildings and apartments. I died after 2 miles.

7/17/10
2 miles in 19:19/Split 9:40
Kalihi St Loop. There was a light rain at the beginning & end of my run (no problem). I've felt a slight but sharp pain in my left, lower shin on my runs this week (hope it isn't shin splints again). I will have to closely monitor this.

Week of 7/5/2010

7/5/10
2.5 miles in 24:16/Split 9:42
Ala Moana Beach Park (See above video). This is my favorite place to run. There's plenty of runners plus Magic Island! Wanted to go 3 miles but died after the 2nd mile. I struggled to finish that last half-mile.

7/7/10
3 miles in 29:03/Split 9:42
Pearl City Bike Path. It was hot and humid. Felt like someone was sitting on my chest for the first mile. Felt better after that.

Am I really that stupid?

1 - I was sitting in my car, at a park, resting after my 3 mile run.
2 - A homeless woman comes up to me and asks to use my cellphone. I say
     sure.
3 - She asks me to give her a ride. I say sure.
4 - She asks me for $10. I drive to an atm and give her the $20 I withdraw.
5 - She asks me if we can go back, to the park, so she can freshen up in the
     bathroom. I say sure.
6 - She asks me to pick up her gay friend a couple of miles away. I say sure.
7 - She asks if I could drop them off at some bar. I say sure.

I was just trying to be nice but....

7/9/10
4 miles in 39:31/Split 9:52
Pearl City Bike Path. Avoided my usual starting point, at Neal Blaisdell Park, and parked at Best Buy (to avoid another possible encounter with the homeless woman). Meant to go 4 miles at the most (long run) but didn’t turn around until the 2.5 miles point (5 miles? What was I thinking!). I ran the first 2 miles too fast so I struggled just to finish 4 miles (which meant a 1 mile walk back to my car).

Week of 6/28/2010

6/28/10
2 miles in 19:10/Split 9:36
Kalihi St Loop. I thought about reversing the loop (to add a little variety). Nah, nah, nah...hate crossing streets!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

6/30/10
3 miles in 28:10/Split 9:21
Pearl City Bike Path (see above image). After the 1st mile, I felt pretty good and thought, "Let's go 3!" I noticed a female runner ahead of me (too far to catch). It gave me something to focus on (other than my fatigue).

7/2/10
2 miles in 18:37/Split 9:19
Kalihi St Loop. I'm getting a bit faster now. When I increase my shorter runs to 3 miles I will need to slow the pace (or risk not finishing!).

Week of 6/21/2010

6/22/10
2 miles in 19:10/Split 9:35
Kalihi St Loop. At the end, I still had the energy to push it up that last bit of a hill (though my lungs were starving for oxygen).

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

6/25/10
3 miles in 29:11/Split 9:44
Lagoon Drive Up & Back (see above image). This course totals 4 miles (flat, flat, flat!). I died after 3 miles and walked the last mile back to my car.

Week of 6/14/2010

6/15/10
2 miles in 19:23/Split 9:42
Kalihi St Loop. After work & grocery shopping, I was exhausted and surprised I had the energy to run. Ran slow & steady only pushing the pace the last .2 miles uphill.

6/17/10
2 miles in 19:05/Split 9:33
Kalihi St Loop. Sore back after work but it didn't effect my running. Felt pretty good towards the end but that last little uphill always leaves me gasping!

6/19/10
2 miles in 19:46/Split 9:53
Kalihi St Loop. Had a case of the blah blahs! I still ran but took it easy.

Week of 6/7/2010

6/7/10
2 miles in 20:34/Split 10:17
Bishop Museum Campus. I was dark so I couldn't keep track of my pace. I know I slowed down on the 2nd mile cuz I was tiring.

6/11/10
2 miles in 19:02/Split 9:31
Kalihi St Loop. Tried to take it easy since it was noon and the sun hot. Still have that out-of-shape feeling.

6/13/10
2 miles in 19:56/Split 9:59
Bishop Museum Campus. Hurray, I finally ran 3x in one week! Struggled to finish last mile @ 10:15/mi.

Week of 5/31/2010

6/1/10
2 miles in 19:13/Split 9:37
Kalihi St Loop. Tired & in no mood to run: tough workday, baby's doctor appt, grocery shopping, ect... Started out slow. Ran the 2nd mile 45 sec faster.

6/3/10
2 miles in 18:44/Split 9:23
Kalihi St Loop. I was gasping that last quarter-mile (uphill). Again, ran the 2nd mile 45 sec faster (8:59). I would love a flat run where I don't have to dodge cars!

Week of 5/24/2010

5/26/10
1.9 miles in 18:58/Split 9:58
Kalihi St Loop. My GPS watch died before the first mile so I had to estimate 2 miles and came up a little short. I used the music, from my iPod, to estimate the elapsed time. I felt pretty good but it was nearly dark when I finished.

5/30/10
2 miles in 19:52/Split 9:57
Kalihi St Loop. Was supposed to run on Wednesday but dragged my feet until Sunday. Shh...cover your ears...I walked 2x for about 10 sec towards the end.

Week of 5/17/2010

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

5/17/10
2 miles in 21:06/Split 10:33
Bishop Museum campus. Loop is just over three-quarters of a mile (see the map above). The run wasn't flat at all but I think my GPS watch was way off:

Forerunner 305: ascent – 670 ft, total elevation change – 1398 ft
Google Maps: ascent – 93 ft, total elevation change – 180 ft

Me thinks Google Maps is the more accurate measuring tool.

5/17/10
2 miles in 20:18/Split 10:10
Kalihi St Loop. First time I didn't stop at the mile-and-a-half point, to rest for 10-15 seconds, and then restart.

Running Up Kalihi Street

2010 Runs

1/25/10
1.5 miles in 15:37/Split 10:25
Kalihi St Loop. First run of the year. Heart rate monitor not working...dead battery?

1/27/10
1 mile in 10:10
Kalihi St Loop.

3/24/10
1 mile in 9:58
Short run to pick up my moped. Picked it up at the end to finish under 10 min.

3/27/10
1.75 miles in 18:46/Split 10:43
Tried to go easy but died running up Kalihi St.

Week of 5/3/10
5/3/10
2 miles in 21:38/Split 10:49
Kalihi St Loop. First 2 miles run of the year. Whoopee:|

5/5/10
2 miles in 21:34/Split 10:49
Kalihi St Loop. I have the out-of-shape blues:(

Week of 5/10/10
5/11/10
2 miles in 20:44/Split 10:22
Kalihi St Loop. Gave up after 1.5 miles. After a minute, decided to finish.

5/14/10
2 miles in 20:35/Split 10:18
Kalihi St Loop. Dying running uphill at the end (stopped 2 times for 10-15 sec).

A Beginning…hopefully!

2010 has been a difficult year for running. During the past year, I've been so busy in my life.

During the last 12 months, I've:

  • Entered the state of matrimony (got married!)
  • Started working 2 jobs
  • Suffered from vertigo
  • Moved
  • Had a baby…okay my wife did most of the work ;-)

I've only ran a handful of times in the last few months. I'm either busy, tired, lazy or all of the above!
